Interesting things

These pages attempt to bring a few things which may be of general interest but out of the ordinary. I have no idea where it will end up.

This page features some of the very interesting models, some built by acquaintances.

Here is an interesting object photographed at the recent (January 2000) Pickets Lock model exhibition near London in the UK. It's a robotic pair of legs and feet which walk quite realistically even if the gait has a slight leaning action to it. The joints are all by RC servo's

The beginning of a scale person?

Here are some picture of a stationary Trevithick engine being built by Danny Perkins in the USA:

Plus two nice close ups. Apparently it was used for dredging the river Thames in the UK

A Fowell Box Patent Jackshaft Engine

This Engine illustrated below is an 1888 vintage from Fowell and son of St. Ives, Huntingdon in the UK

It is being modelled by Brian Hutchings who is designing it and making his own castings etc..........what a task!

Brian has kindly sent some pics' which are below.

This is Brian's traction engine .....the boiler and cylinder block in this photo are mock-ups made to help him size various bits. When I first saw the photo I thought it was the working model! This is the picture from which Brian is working............who needs plans!

Apparently this still has the plastic boiler...........would you have guessed? The real one is now finished...........I can testify to that since I saw the model at the Midlands Model Engineering exhibition (1998)...... and yes, even the boiler was own designed to scale as far as practical..

Here is a picture of all the patterns for the castings......all home made. There are 22 in all with 5 core boxes making 28 castings

That hind wheel at the bottom with all the bits on top is 18" in diameter. That will give some idea of the size and magnitude if the project let alone the model.

In case you wondered the flywheel to the top left is 12 3/8 inches in diameter.

View of the completed motion works On display at a local meet

The above two pictures show Brian's engine in Summer 1999

The Jackshaft engine on show at the Midlands model engineering exhibition 1999

A nice agricultural combination by Rinus Hoosteger of Holland

A nice traction engine by Rinus seen here being exhibited at a Dutch Model show The threshing machine also by Rinus being driven and........ ...........the straw bailer at the very end. A very pretty combination don't you think?
